Alan Chapman

a Luthier

With over 50 years experience Alan Chapman is one of the most broadly knowledgeable and consistent builders of the Classical Guitar working today. Originally self-taught, in order to gain a wide perspective on guitar construction Alan has built guitars of all styles throughout his career, from precise Torres copies to experimental extended-lattice bracing, double-tops, and almost everything in between. He is known in the community for his constant experimentation, fastidious attention to detail and relentless pursuit of greater excellence.

Gef Fisher

Another luthier, writer of the website

I took up the Classical Guitar at the age of fourteen after witnessing an inspiring performance of Dyens' "Tango en Skai" by a local undergrad. While completing my bachelor's degree at Williams College, I broadened my musical perspective through study of plucked string instruments from all over the world while learning to play the Sitar with master Hindustani musician Veena Chandra, as well as the Zhongruan and Guqin with Wang Guowei and Susan Cheng of the internationally renowned Music from China Ensemble.

I first met Alan through my teacher Rob Phelps when I was about 16, and after graduating, I joined Alan for a full-time apprenticeship. Since then, I have built or been involved in building more than 50 guitars in addition to performing numerous repairs and adjustments on fine instruments by a variety of world class luthiers. I am currently refining my own lattice-top guitar design, as well as a more traditional all-wood fan-braced model.

Evelyn Mahon

not a luthier

In addition to creating one-off hand-painted watercolor labels for the Guitars, Evelyn serves as media advisor/photographer/site manager/travel buddy/snack dispersal to Chapman & Fisher (though mostly to Fisher, since she’s married to that one). Evelyn has worked as a director, actor, statistician, and in a pinch, a Disney Princess. She would like to thank you for reading this far!
